Why am I feeling lower back and knee pain at the same time?

At some point, you’ve probably felt some pain in your back, and you might also have experienced some knee pain. However, you might be unprepared to experience both lower back and knee pain at the same time.

That’s not surprising. Most people aren’t aware that there are problems that can lead to pain in both of these important areas of the body. Physical therapists can use virtual physical therapy sessions to help you learn about the issues that are causing your lower back and knee pain. In addition, these specialists can use the same sessions to start addressing your pain.

Three types of issues can lead to both lower back and knee pain:

  1. Lower back problems — Lower back pain is something that about 80% of people deal with in their lifetime. In part, the high number of sufferers is because there are many issues that can trigger back pain. Some of these issues include herniated lumbar discs and sciatica. However, such issues can also send pain signals shooting down your legs. They can also force you to change how you walk in ways that can trigger knee pain.

  1. Knee problems — The opposite is also true. A painful knee problem can trigger pain in your lower back. One example of a knee problem that can do this is osteoarthritis. This joint condition occurs when the knee cartilage breaks down as the body ages. Knee osteoarthritis can cause people to become less active, which can lead to weakness in your back and core muscles. In turn, weakness in these muscles can leave you open to painful back issues.

  1. Problems between back and knee — Another possibility is that the problem isn’t in either your back or your knee. The problem may actually be in your buttocks, hips, or thighs, which are all located between your lower back and knees. A pulled muscle in these areas can result in gait changes that can cause knee and back pain. Muscle imbalances in your buttocks or thighs can also trigger the same types of discomfort.
