There are many times when you might develop a sharp pain in your inner thigh. You may develop this type of pain during a heavy leg day workout. Women may develop this type of pain during pregnancy. Other people may develop it if they have certain hip issues or while playing sports.
The fact that you might develop sharp pain in your inner thigh isn’t all that surprising to medical professionals. A 2019 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that nearly 37% of adults experience some form of lower limb, or leg, pain. A virtual physical therapist can help you take steps to address your inner thigh pain. The first of these is helping you figure out what’s causing the sharp pain in your inner thigh.
4 issues that can trigger sharp inner thigh pain
Physical therapists can ask you questions about your pain during virtual sessions. They can also have you perform a movement analysis to help narrow down the source of your pain. A few of the issues that may be uncovered by a virtual PT evaluation are:
- Hernias — Hernias occur when a part of the intestines push through a weak area or tear in the wall of the lower abdomen. For some people, this may occur where the groin and thigh meet. The result can be pain radiating down into your thigh.
2. Muscle strains — Repetitive movements or overloading your legs during a workout can lead to a thigh or groin muscle strain. Such an injury can trigger a sharp pain when it first occurs.
3. Symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) — Women often experience some level of thigh pain during pregnancy. Often, this pain is a result of SPD. This condition occurs when ligaments that hold the pelvic bones together at the symphysis pubis relax too much. The symphysis pubis is a cartilage structure that’s located between the pelvic bones, and it’s located at the bottom of the pelvis. Walking, turning over in bed and climbing stairs may increase SPD pain.
4. Hip osteoarthritis — This issue occurs primarily in older people. It develops when the hip cartilage wears out and allows the hip bones to rub against each other. This rubbing can trigger pain that radiates into your groin and thigh.
